OMG this is life changing…well not really

20 Mar

Hey lovely people.

Got some good news for ya and I got some not so good news..like life changing news…wellllll it’s really not that bad.

Good News

I’ve set up shop somewhere else in cyber space, and it’s around the corner..no need to travel far, just a CLICK AWAY.

My current blog is called Dance Live Inspire but my domain is kayannward.wordpress.com, so I decided to start a new blog..it’s still called Dance Live Inspire. except, the domain is DanceLiveInspire.Wordpress.com. Also this blog is dedicated to dance, everything dance and only dance. It’s not the conventional blog..

Dance Live Inspire

A blog that connects, educates, develops and highlights the creative freedom of dancers and dance lovers in the commercial & entertainment industry.

It’s not censored, it’s truthful and there are lots more to come from this.

So what’s the not so good news you may ask

Well, I will be changing my current blog..I will have everything from my website at kayannward.com and I will have a personal blog dedicated to helping ladies look and feel good from the inside out..and may I add this comes with all the randomness, craziness and misbehaving antics that I’m known for. I figured the best way to help others, which I really truly love to do, is to be myself 100% of the time.

So you see the bad news is not so terrible and life threatening after all.

I will continue to post some great stuff on this blog, but it won’t be for long. And I promise you when I move my personal blog, you will be notified.

So here is what I need you to do..if you love dance, then go over to Dance Live Inspire and check it out. CLICK HERE

And thank you in advance..:)

Talk to you lovelies later.

It’s your business to know..here is why

14 Nov

Last week I posted this on my facebook status “One of the most important lessons I learned as a dancer and choreographer..”If your going to make this your living, your career, then you need a business plan.” When I first heard that I kind of got it, but through experience I can say “I GET IT LOUD and CLEAR”

Ayeesha Kanji asked “so can you expand on this more in a blog, I’d like to read it!”

Follow up

Dancers are creative people,we want to dance, create, dance, create, dance and create..you get the drift.

For many of us a business plan, is not on the list of things to do. What the hell is that a dancer/choreographer may ask..I just want to dance, it’s not about the money.

Many like to think I’m going to dance, and something great will happen, and then I will live off of this something great for the rest of my life.

Well when you’re a dancer and or choreographer and you plan on making your talent your career, you need to get serious and ask yourself questions like, “How will I do what I love and live the life I want to live by doing what I love?”

That’s the question, I was told to ask myself from a mentor.

He said, you kind of get it, but when you do, you will really understand, and then your thought pattern will change.

Well it did change here is why.

1) I realized that I can no longer just do something just because I like to do it..I have to be smart with my time, I have to be smart with choosing the right people to work with, choosing the right people to learn from. I have to continue to learn, even learn things that have nothing to do with dance/fitness, but they help my overall career.

Downside: When this isn’t done then your scattered, doing everything, which often results in burn out, and you’re not anywhere closer to your dream or your goal.

2) He said there is a system and a foundation that businesses are set up from. Pay attention to how businesses are set up, and follow. Some may think it’s bad to follow…ummmm helllo…if your following in the steps of someone successful, and your learning valuable information that will help you, and help you help others, then this is a good thing…

Downside “When we don’t humble ourselves and allow ourselves to learn, we miss out on what can help us, we end up falling behind because we failed grow.”

3) People that love what they do and find a way to live a great life by using their talents “These people have a plan, maybe they didn’t have one when they started, but to maintain a career that will make you live from your talents, you need a clear plan, and a plan of action”

Downside: Not having a plan to succeed, is planning to fail.

You need to know

  • What you want?
  • Why you want it?
  • How you will get it?
  • When you want it by ?
  • What you need to do to get it?
  • How will you know when you have it?

Dance and fitness is life, it really is, without it, a major part of me is gone, and if this is you, then we can relate. Even if your talent is music, acting etc..We as artist have to be smart, and understand that we can’t leave our lives up to others. Get creative,  create a plan, implement the plan and continue on the path to make sure we are sharing our talent to the world without being “The broke ass artist”

What was your 1st dance class like

8 Nov

What was your 1st dance class experience like?

I remembered mine. It went something  like this.

I was told about a popular Hip-Hop dance class.

I went to this dance class, thinking yes finally I will be able to dance, and do what I love to do.

I walked into the studio, it was packed, I knew no one, except the girl who invited me. By the time she took her spot in class, her focus changed and I was not on her mind, she was ready, and I was left alone to figure it out.

The class started with a warm up, that was hard as hell.

The teacher then came in and taught the dance routine, which was also hard as hell, I couldn’t figure it out if my  life depended on it.

Damn, I was awful, so painful to think about…I was horrible, I just didn’t get it..”turn left, turn right..and boom kack, kack kack, hit”.???????….I didn’t get it.

I was bumping into people, and tripping all over myself….HOT MESS OF A HOT MESS

I left the class and whatever ego I had was crushed to pieces..lol

I didn’t attend another dance class again until 2 years later. I was still awful when I took another dance class, only now I was more than determined to get better.

I figured I was a good freestyle dancer, but I was awful at picking up choreography.

Through time and dedication, I learned how to pick up choreography faster, and I learned how to  execute my moves better.

Everyone has there challenges, my 1st challenge as a dancer, was to learn how to learn..

So if your thinking that you will never get better, you will..just keep at it…and give yourself permission to learn, and to learn you have to be open to knowing that you don’t know…that’s why you’re in class..you also have to be nice to yourself…and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself..laughing is good for the soul..

I’m still laughing at myself because of how horrible I was..HOT HOT MESS..

****If your thinking about dancing, you want to start, or you want to get better..a friendly tip is just start and don’t give up****

I wish it didn’t take me two years to go back to a dance class, but what is done is done..I’m dancing now, and loving every bit of it.

Have you had a funny dance class experience, if so share it with me?

Show your Student ID card or attend with a friend to SAVE on dance classes

6 Nov

Saving money is a good habit to develop, so here are two ways dance lovers could SAVE on great dance classes.

I always have students telling me they want to attend Dancehall Reggae classes, workshops and the Sweat B4 U Sweat “Caribbean Dance Workout” classes, but their financial situation is always holding them back.

So here is something just for the hard-working students.

Student Discount: Because being a student is hard work, and sometimes stressful, it’s always good to get a good deal for just being a student.

Show your student ID card when you attend class and pay only $12 for each drop in class.

Also look out for future workshops and sessions that allow you to get a discount just because you’re a student.

You must be a student 18+ in any post secondary institution (High School, College, University etc)

Friend Discount

When you plan on attending class with a friend, your more likely to show up and have a good time, your more likely to push yourself, and your more likely to relax because you have your friend with you.

So to honor friendship and companion ship, here is a discount just for you.

Attend class with your favorite pal, or encourage a friend to take class with you, because you will both save. Pay $10 each when you attend with your friend.

Registration is always simple

I’m teaching one last workshop for 2011 and I need to know what type of dance workshop you want me to teach.

Yes this is in your hands, so let me know.

Here is what you need to know.

Send me an email to info@kayannward.com

Or write on my facebook wall under the status “What should the last dance workshop for 2011 be?”

You can choose Hip-Hop, Old School dance, sexy dance, soca, dancehall reggae, performance dance,  it’s all up to you. (But you have to choose a dance style that I teach, don’t ask me to teach a ballet workshop, it’s just not going to happen lol)

Thanks in advance.

Loving Kelly Rowlands new Vibe.

14 Oct

Kelly Rowland took some time off, and came back looking amazing, and more comfortable than ever with her music, style and sense of self.

And I’m not mad at all.

I loved her 1st single “Motivation” now she is back with “Lay it on me” and I’m loving everything about this song and vibe.

Go Kelly.

You can tell she has come a long way since her Destiny Child days. Which is amazing.

Check out her new song, just in case you missed it.

Something to be excited about

15 Sep

I haven’t posted a blog in a while.

And I have a good reason. I’ve been in my lab, creating, revamping and plotting for growth. And yes its a lot of work, dedication and all that good and not so good stuff. But overall it’s really exciting and I can’t wait to share and reveal everything to you.

Overall everything is a process and it will take time for things to fully transition into the new and improved picture.

So here is what I’ve been cooking up.

New website: Oh ya, its time I let go of my stale website. I will be launching two new websites. One for Sweat B4 U Sweat “Caribbean Dance and Workout” this website will have class and workshop schedules for everything Dancehall Reggae, Soca and Caribbean Dance Workout.

The other website is for my production and entertainment company, this will have information on choreography services, private/group lessons, entertainment services, artist development, show productions, fitness events and so much more.

Blog: Yes even my blog, will get a new look.

New Sweat B4 U Sweat classes will be starting late September, so for all of you who have been patiently waiting, I do apologize for the long wait, however I appreciate your support and I can’t wait to start teaching.

I have added new Toronto Sexy dance classes and workshops to the schedule, so there will always be something new and exciting.

I always believe in growth and developing ones skill. I’ve been contemplating for the longest time about taking photography classes, and I believe its time to do so. No I haven’t registered for a course as yet, but I will register for a photography course either this year or early 2012. So if you know of any amazing courses, or if you have any pointers, please let me know.

With that said don’t go anywhere, because if you do, you may miss what will happen next.

OH SHIT: “I have to start figuring out my life”

26 Aug

So your dancing, touring, being asked to perform here and there. Your performing in countless shows, you’re a popular dancer, and everyone knows you, and then one day you wake up, and your like OH SHIT, I HAVE TO FIGURE SHIT OUT, I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT MY LIFE”

What am I going to be doing 5 years from now, where will I be, will I still be dancing, will I be teaching, what do I want to do with my life?

Then you feel your stomach turn, and your like OMG, whats going on, I spent so much time doing this and that, and not enough time figuring out the fundamental of my life.

Now your thinking about, whats in your savings account, possible and future investments, making sure your financially taken care of, you’re trying to remember who is in your family because you have been so disconnected.

I’m not writing this blog to give you answers, I’m writing to say, don’t forget to think about your life, don’t forget that a music video doesn’t last a life time, don’t forget that the tour and the shows will slow down, and when it does, whats your plan, if you don’t have one, now is a good time to start planning.

I’m not saying you should become a worry wort, and start stressing yourself, I’m saying, BE SMART. Ask yourself, how will I dance, how will I live and how will I stay inspired and inspire others.

Figure out your life, the life you want to live, because you have to live it. Not your choreographer, not the artist your working for..YOU.
